I have meet Watts family through online add. After few phone calls back and forth we have selected the date and time of the shoot. Now I do want to talk a little bit about timing of photoshoots and this can apply to most of 90% of the shoots I do. The reason why I prefer certain times of the day is because of where light is.  I could say that the best time for the photoshoot is either early in the morning or later in the day closer to dusk. And it would be 100% true, but some times when especially photographing families that rule goes out the window. But why is early in the morning or late in the day is the best time? Well in few words: no harsh shadows and more beautiful light (also if you live in hot areas like here in Sacramento it is very hot during the middle of the day). To some degree the rule in photography is try to avoid light source to be right over your subjects head (or you will get lots of racoon eyes photos), yet I do know photographer whose style is to photograph only in the middle of the day and the photos come out GREAT. I know that I could do the same with flashes and find shade but it gets complicated even though I do use all of that during photoshoots. I could talk about this in more than college paper essay but I will say that if you look through most of photography you will see that for general purposes the great time to photograph is in the morning or later in the day. (Monkey ranch: Rule does not apply to overcast day).

But coming back to Watts family, we have scheduled this session for early morning and the light was beautiful. This was my first time ever in my life (even though I lived in Sacramento for a long time) being in the area where the Watts family lives and I have to say I loved the area, the park next to them and as well as very friendly neighbors (as you can see in the photo below).

I loved photographing their oldest daughter, even though she was very shy in the beginning of the shoot but later on she opened up. She loves to pose and be active in front of the camera and it shows in the photos. I will say that the baby is very cute and adorable.

Also something that I like to do for families is to photograph not only the whole family and the kids but give some photos to the parent by themselves. As a family man myself I do some iphone photos with my wife but rarely we do professional photos of just us. It is always of the whole family or of our daughter. So capturing few shots of just the parents brings a smile for my clients.

Watts were a fun family to photograph and I really enjoyed their photoshoot.

Last month I had an opportunity to photograph Maggie and Steve engagement session in  Empire Mine State Historical Park (very long name) not far from Grass Valley. It is beautiful wooded area, with lots of history about gold rush in California. But this post is not about history of a gold mine, it is about Maggie and Steve.

Even though I have lived for more than 7 years less than 30 miles from this location I have never been to it. But at that time I was not into photography but architecture, so there is a reason why I never visited it. So coming to the state park and seeing the beauty that this location can offer was very exciting for me. I knew that I can produce great images for this couple as soon as I was there. The estate of George Roberts is still there and this is one of the location that Maggie and Steve wanted for their wedding but sadly it was already booked for their date. Yet they still wanted the photos of this location and this was great way to do so, even though their wedding will be more of backyard wedding now.

Photographing Steve and Maggie was fun, and it’s not because they brought two very hipper/cute/small dogs with them. Which I encourage my couples if they want to bring pets with them feel free to do so, and why not. But because Steve and Maggie are very easy-going, great people to talk to, and they look great in photos.

 I am looking forward to their wedding and to produce great images for them.

Few months ago I had an opportunity to be a engagement photographer for Toly and Gina. It happened here in old Sacramento yearly in the morning, but I just want to say that they are a great couple, fun and I loved photographing them. It is always good to be part of photo session that everyone enjoys and has good time. I am looking forward to their wedding because not only that they are different ethnicity but the dynamic it will bring to their wedding day. Having Italians, Russians, Ukrainians, and Americans this will be a fun wedding to photograph.

I always love to hear couples stories. And with their permission I would love to share it with the rest of the world. So here are few question I have asked them:

Gina tell me how did you meet?

We met through a friend, I added him on Facebook and admired him for quite a long time. Some time later I finally had the guts to message him and ask him if he wanted to hangout and ever since that day we have been together!

Toly did you plan for a long time to propose to Gina?

I have been planning to propose to Gina since January of 2013

How did Toly propose to you Gina?

Toly such a romantic guy, took me to San Francisco for our one year anniversary. We went to sanitary the next morning rode some rides and went to go lay on the beach. When I was looking away from him for a few moments he asked me what was in the sand (a treasure box buried) I unburied it and opened it. Inside was a scroll/letter that he made me read out loud announcing his proposal. I SAID YES!!!

Was it the way you planned Toly?

It went exactly the way I wanted it to go.

Were you surprised Gina by what Toly did?

It was honestly a very scary moment for me. It at first I was not so happy because I was literally in so much shock I didn’t know if it was reality or not. I was looking around and blinking my eyes LITERALLY because I wanted to make sure it wasn’t a dream!

Gina did you know that Toly will be proposing to you?

He was acting funny on the beach and before the rides…. I wondered but then I doubted it.   All I was expecting was a one year anniversary surprise not a lifelong request!

Where did it happen?

Funny but it happened right under a little lifeguard stand in santacruz  on the beach.

Toly did you think Gina knew that you will propose to her?

She had no idea about the proposal but she did hint when i sort of gave it away by not agreeing to go on the roller coaster.

Even though I am Sacramento wedding photographer but recently I was in San Francisco for meeting and personal photography of the beautiful city San Francisco. The night before I was preparing for the meetings to make sure I have everything, as well as preparing all my photography equipment for the photos. That night I notice something interesting with my equipment. Before I say what it was let me assure you, before every photo shoot I go through all my equipment to make sure everything is working right, (as well as the back-up stuff), I clean all my lenses, and the camera so there will be no dust on the mirror and so on. But one thing I was not paying attention to was my tripod. As I was assembling it to see if I need to grease it, and that it works I noticed one let was very loose. And guess what, I was missing one bolt in one of the legs (see the image below). It was more of a SURPRISE to me than panic, but it made me think about weddings and all the details that I photograph for the couples.

As you see in the images here on this blog post I shoot tons of details throughout weddings. There are couples that put their time and sweat into details, to make sure the wedding is unique to their style.

As I do with my photography equipment, I make sure that everything is working properly and prepare everything I need before the event or session. After each session or event before I leave, I make sure I have everything packed where it should be. When I come home I make sure that it all works and if I need to do some repairs or clean something.

So the point of this blog is this: If you are planning to do your wedding details make sure that you focus on the details. Yes it will take more time and money and you will be frustrated at one point but the end product is something you have created yourself and it reflects you.

But for that to happen write down everything you want to do in a checklist or some kind of spreadsheet. Before you go overboard with all the details look at what others did on pinterest/magazines/blogs and get inspired, and ask around from your professionals who will be at your wedding to make sure either you are not going overboard or you have missed something. If you are hiring a professional to do your details ask them for a checklist.

So don’t forget its the details that make your wedding unique and of course you.

Some time ago I’ve had a pleasure photographing Nicole. It was more of a fashion driven photo shoot for which I did not use whole lot of light modifiers except for a beauty dish and a hand made light diffusing screen which is about 8×5 feet.

It was noticeable from the first few shots, she connected with the camera and brought out the best in her. It was great that Nicole was the model because it was very easy working with her and she knew what she was doing. So that way I could focus on imagery and nothing else.

Now some photos I was playing around with in photoshop to get that effect which I was inspired by Emily Soto, but mostly (80%) it is out of the camera just little tweaks here and there. Its all about just knowing where to place the model and the lights.
