Photographing Low Income Housing by Sacramento Architectural Photographer

Sacramento Architectural Photographer

When considering to write this post as a Sacramento Architectural Photographer I had to think about it for few weeks. Not that it’s embarrassing or considering what to write about but just over all this project was on its own different level.

The company which had hired me to photograph for them was SHRA and I will have to say: great people who work there at the main office. The details of the project was that I had to photograph close to 70 locations in two months. That’s a lot even for me but I was eager to try it and placed my bid. After winning the position to photograph for SHRA the real challenge began. How do I plan out to photograph so many location in such a short time with all other projects in schedule. At this point I have to explain that I do photograph lots of real estate and interior design photography in a month so planning was the key. Also another challenge was how to photograph such locations, meaning they are not most beautiful architectural locations. Now some places where interesting and some were “WHAT?” but job is a job. Below are few photos which I have selected for this post that I think turned out pretty good considering I had to avoid people, cars as much as possible and it had to be on a good weather days only.

During this project I did run into people who live in the locations what were to some point hostile towards me, rude, and neighborhoods where I was even afraid of getting out of my car. But some locations didn’t even care that I was there which made my job much easier than trying to explain why I am there.

Over all I really enjoyed photographing this project and I would do it again because I am a problem solver and I love challenges.

The Not Pretty Home by Sacramento Real Estate Photographer Shutter Avenue Photography

We have all seen those picture perfect homes and I as a Sacramento Real Estate Photographer I do like them too. Yes those are the homes that get the most attention. See image above for example. But that’s not the case with most homes. Even in my line of duty I photograph the good and not so good homes. Being Sacramento Real Estate Photographer I get to photograph both of the spectrum. In reality most of the agents that I work with do rely on me to make ok homes to look really good. Yes I do photograph million dollar homes, or homes that have been staged by professionals, and I am sure that every agent want’s that. The truth is, not all homes are ready for photos and that’s why it is my job to make them look good. Yet sometime I get homes like the one below, really downright bad.

So use the slider to see how I have photographed a bad home and made it look a bit better than it is. With that said I didn’t really do lots of photoshopping in this home. I mean there is mold, and extremely dirty carpet, and walls that you just don’t even want to touch. At one point I thought “Covid-19 has nothing on this home, I need a full body suit just to be in there”. But as a Sacramento Real Estate Photographer it is my job to photograph this home because that’s why I was hired to do, to make it look better than it is.

By the way I am not bashing the agent here, every agent out there had or has a home that is not pretty at all and still has to sell it somehow. So it is up-to photographer to do his/her job and that’s why hiring professional Sacramento Real Estate Photographer is so important for great homes and not.

Also all that I am showing here is an average metering exposure image from my camera and what I have done to the photo.

Round Table Pizza (by Sacramento Architectural Photographer Shutter Avenue Photography)

Sacramento Architectural Photographer

It’s been a while since I have written anything but it’s been a very busy year (2019) for me. I wanted to share this project which I have photographed for Round Table Pizza last year as an Sacramento Architectural Photographer it was an honor to do.

Photographed by Sacramento Architectural Photographer

As for this project, this location here in Sacramento is one of the first remodels for the whole chain. They are venturing into a new, modern, and redesigning their restaurants to improve their look. I would admit it wasn’t as what I was expecting because the renderings they have sent me looked really cool but it has more to do with what the city/landlord could let them do with the location. So they had to leave some things as they were and completely redesign the interior, but for Sacramento Architectural Photographer it was still interesting to photogrpah it. There where challenges such as dark spaces, bright light from all the windows and the time frame of when it could be photographed (with limited window of opportunity since they had to get the store ready for opening). Anyways, it’s never an easy with this kind of projects but it was surely fun for me to step up to the challenge and create something great.

Likes and dislikes about FujiFilm Cam Remote App Review

Now that I have used the FujiFilm Cam Remote App for more than three years I can finally rate it and discus everything that I like about it as well as dislikes. Now before I go on, this is my personal opinion about it and yes in the past I have used CamRanger which I did like to some degree. Even though Fujifilm Cam App was recently updated nothing really changed, just the look is a little bit different.

The Pros:

  • Very easy to use: the first time I have installed FujiFilm Cam Remote App it was at a job site and I had no problems to navigate around the app.
  • Access to the features of the camera while using the app: You can pretty much access all main camera functions which you will need to do stills or video. Things such as ISO, Film Simulation, White Balance, Flash Mode and Self Timer. Now some functions I don’t really use as Self Timer or Flash Mode but other features I do use on regular basis.
  • Live preview: Yes, I think this is the best feature of this app is that you can see exactly how it is. This makes it much easier when photographing for architectural projects because I can determine if I need to move something or wait until something is out of the frame without running back and forth to the camera and adjusting it. Also it will show you what your white balance is and exposure as well in live view, best thing for real estate photography.
  • Preview/Import Mode: This does come in handy when photographing for interior designers because you can select an image and zoom in to see if anything needs to be moved or adjusted. Also the import feature is great because instead of photographing with iPhone and posting on social media FujiFilm Cam Remote can just save the image and then you can adjust it in any editor app to post. I do like that.

The Cons:

There are few more cons than pros which is not surprising since I don’t think the developers where focusing on the app as much as they should have.

  • You need to have your white balance preset prior to opening the app. This one thing really bugs me. Yes it does have white balance access to the camera but not to the full extend. All you can do is preselect white balance options but you can’t adjust as you would in camera. For example if you want to photograph outside and you need to select nice warm color balance of 5600K but then realized that it’s not enough and need to now adjust to higher or lower number there is no option to do so in the app. Only presets. 0_o
  • Bracketing, Bracketing and yes Bracketing: No you don’t have an option to select bracketing for multiple exposures. Why not? I don’t know. Yes you can manually adjust the exposure but every second does count when doing outside photos. Now for interior design photography this doesn’t bother me at all but for architectural and real estate photography when you have moving cars or trees due to wind yes this does irritate me a bit.
  • Auto focus only: On the screen you can only select where you want your green box to be in the photo for focus. I have tired to do manual focus first then turning on the app and photograph but then the app just crashes by giving me unreadable files. If FujiFilm can fix this one issue of maybe lock-in the focus while using the app this would be so helpful.
  • Range: While they they say it had a long distance for it to work I have found out that it only works best at maybe no further than 50 feet and if you have walls around you then even shorter distance. This does complicate the shoot especially when I do real estate photography and have to go to other rooms to hide or even when doing dusk photos outside. The app developers really need to improve the wi-fi connection in this area.

What can I say: I love Fuji and their cameras but their app is a joke. Maybe they need to take a lesson from CamRanger app and improve it but I am afraid in reality this will not happen any time soon. Overall it’s a very useful tool while photographing especially if you are a street photographer or when using it for architectural photography.

MJB Homes By Sacramento Architectural Photographer

Last year I had an opportunity as a Sacramento Architectural Photographer to work with Mike Bouchard from MJB Homes to capture one of his home which was build from ground up.

Sacramento Architectural Photographer

When working with builders it’s always an interesting experience and I do mean it in a good way. Because the homes which they build are always unique to the client and not a cookie cutter homes. Although sometimes the home is furnished and sometimes its not. I don’t have a preference for furnished or not but I do think it’s more appealing when it is furnished.

Coming back to this home, I really liked the kitchen and the views from the back patio were stunning. Does that mean the rest of the home was not interesting? Oh no that would not be right at all. The wood rafters in the main space, plus the fireplace and the bathrooms were also wonderfully designed. Even all bedrooms had some kind of a unique feature to them. Over all the home was gourdgeous and I am really happy that Mike hired me to photograph this project for him. But enough of talking let me show you more photos from this photo shoot.

I would highly recommend Mike and his company MJB Homes to anyone who is looking for a contractor to build a custom home for themselves. Mike is a great guy and knows what he is doing.
