Fuji X-T1 Review by Shutter Avenue Photography

So now that I had my Fuji X-T1 with XF 10-24mm F4 IOS lens I can finally say something good and bad about it. But first off all just like good review of anything I will start with good part(s) about the camera and the lens.Fuji X-T1 and Fuji XF 10-24mm F4 IOS Review

Fuji X-T1 the good stuff:

I LOVE THIS CAMERA!!!! Sorry had to get it out of my system. By this time I photographed everything with it from Architecture, Interior Design, Real Estate to Portraits, Weddings and so on. It’s a bit smaller from a regular DSLR camera like Nikon D300 but it’s light weight. I love it that is light because when I was photographing my first wedding I didn’t even get tired from having two X-T1s’ on me. They are light, and fast. What I mean is: I would just have one on left side and one on right side of me and also so that I would not kill the battery so quickly (since I don’t have battery grip) I would turn it off and then when I needed to turn it on and it’s fast to do the job.

Fuji X-T1 and Fuji XF 10-24mm F4 IOS Review

The ISO on this camera is amazing and because of dynamic range option they have it is great. The image quality even with high ISO is just wow. Shooting photos at a wedding in dark rooms was a piece of cake. I didn’t have to worry that ISO will overwhelm the photos and I will need to do lots of post production to correct this issue.

Fuji X-T1 and Fuji XF 10-24mm F4 IOS Review

Now for Architectural photography, it’s even better. I love it that I can customize the white balance on this camera (meaning not only select the K value but also customize even that value if I want more or less blue, yellow, green and red). By this time some of you will say “Just shoot RAW”, well I could but if I can get it out of the camera right why waste hard drive space. Yet for interior design or specific architectural project I will shoot in RAW but for real estate photography, not even once.

The features of the camera lets me customize to my likings of how it should photograph to even specific buttons to do what I need them to do. Also the adjustable-tilt screen is fun to have. There are times in portrait or wedding photography where this is very beneficial. For real estate, architecture, interior photography not really since I use my iPad to photograph.

Fuji X-T1 not so good stuff:

Battery, battery, battery. They need to do something about this, I have no words to explain how the battery’s life is only good for short period of time (up to 300-500 photos if turning it on and off but is the camera is on all the time then maybe 3-4 hours before the batter starts to die).

Wi-Fi mode – good but only for short distances. I found out from out in the field testing I can get range from 50 feet to 200 feet depending if I am inside or outside the building. This is a good time to talk about Fuji X-T1 remote app. Its very hard to say lots of good stuff about it because it need major update. The app is slow sometimes, and you get only 25% of options while photographing from full potential of the camera. The best way I found out to use it is make sure that the camera is fully set to the setting you need then connect the app.

Fuji XF 10-24mm F4 IOS lens:

Love this lens! Its sharp all around, almost no bowing effect at the edges, and its fast. Now this is a good portrait lens for wide angle but not the best. This lens is best for architectural style of photography. I have been using this lens for the past few months and from every other lens which I have used in the past (in the same aspect ratio) this is far by the best lens. I don’t know if I have anything bad to say about this lens.

Well this concludes my short review of Fuji X-T1 with XF 10-24mm F4 IOS lens hope to get more lenses and maybe update my review some time later next year.

Architectural Photography for the State of Colorado by Shutter Avenue Photography

It’s extremely hard to get my hands these days to write a post, even though I have lots to write about such as wedding photography, portrait photography, architectural photography and so on. But there is something which I am proud of and would like to share with you the reader.

Denver Architectural Photography by Shutter Avenue Photography

It was a big honor for me to be chosen by the State of Colorado for a particular project. Before I get a head of myself I would like to start from the beginning. Few months ago I had an opportunity to photograph portraits of very important people who are on the board of State of Colorado. Sorry but I don’t think I have the right to say their names yet I do use those photos for promotional material only. Coming back to the the story, recently (which was more like two months ago) I had a phone call from one of the staff members and asking me to photograph the State of Colorado Supreme Court room plus few other photos. Honestly, I took this as an opportunity of a lifetime because there are tons and tons of not only paperwork but also hours, people to contact if I wanted it to do this for my personal portfolio. In the end we have decided to photograph two photos of interior and two of exterior. I know that I could provide them with more images but there was a hiccup, they had requested a date for me to photograph the interior photos for the same date as they would be doing touch-ups of the ceiling. So I had to work around other workers (repairing the ceiling) and me trying to not to include them in the photos and their equipment (but in the end I still had to do lots of photoshopping). Also as I have mentioned they have requested two exterior photos, and here is the second best part of this architectural photography project: one photo from the street view and one photo from the most top of the capital looking down on the supreme court. Wow, what an experience it was to go to the top of the State Capital dome (all I want to say is LOTS OF STAIRS to climb). While talking with the state worker at the most top as you can go I did ask if I could do some more photos for personal use (some modification to the contract) but in the end I got it. Anyways, enough of me talking take a look the photos below.

Matt and Alex Wedding | Denver Wedding Photographer

Even Though I am established as a denver wedding photographer that doesn’t mean I don’t travel. It’s kind of weird to start a blog post but this summer I flew to California more like Sacramento area to photograph a wedding. I love to travel and I really enjoy when I have an opportunity to travel outside of Denver. But this post is not about me and why I love to travel, this post is about Matt and Alex and this about their wedding.

Denver Wedding Photographer

The wedding was almost a the pick of summer and with that came the heat (not just from a great wedding but from the sun as well). Their wedding was fantastic! I can’t say it enough but I love it when people treat you at a wedding not as a photographer who has to be working but as a guest. Everyone was super friendly, following directions from me, and most of all that all equals out to great photos. Now I do have to mention that I did photograph Matt and Alex engagement photos (click here to see them) yet because of that it was much easier to work with them. They know how I work and what I would request from them but on the other side it was easier for me as well because I didn’t have to teach them the ropes of how to pose and so on. The end result is great, and once again I will say that their wedding as just awesome from start to finish.

Goodbye by Shutter Avenue Photography

Either this post will be short or long, I will try to keep it short yet why did I call this post Goodbye? Well keep on reading to the end =)

The past 10 days have been very interesting … It all started when I was just about to photograph a home for a real estate agent when something happened (the story is too long), the end result involves a bug and a camera crashing down to concrete floor. o_o Not fun when the job is not done. Anyways you can see the photo of the camera (Nikon D300) at the bottom of the page and its state of the lens.

All of this at the last minute made me go to Camren here in Denver to rent out a camera to finish the jobs for that day. The camera that I have rented was Nikon D7000 with Tamron 10-24mm lens.

Nikon D700 Camera Review

Nikon D7000 short review: The camera itself is not bad, and I did like it. The D7000 if you are interested and looking for a camera to buy is good. It has 16MP which is a good jump from 12MP sensor in the category of these cameras but still not as good as Canon in the same range which has 18MP.  The camera also has full HD movie recording which if you do video it’s really good. It also has dual card reader which comes in handy when you don’t want to think about losing by accident photos or shooting a wedding and you need storage. One other feature what is a 50/50 is the focusing points, it only has 39 comparing to other cameras which has 51 points of focus. Handles noise (ISO) well, the layout of the buttons are well places meaning the functions for quick selections, the white balance is good since I shoot JPG’s 95% of the time, but I noticed that exposure metering is a little bit off especially when it comes to over exposure. Also it’s a bit small for my taste. It just didn’t feel like a professional camera, and for the price range that it sells there are better cameras out there. Also the weight of the camera is a little bit heavier than for example D5100.

Tamron 10-24mm review: On the other hand the lens Tamron 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 DI II was just TERRIBLE. If you are planing to buy this lens just write out a check to me and give me your money or better yet spend just a bit more and buy Sigma 12-24mm. What was Tamron thinking when they made this lens? As soon as I started to photograph with it I wanted to get a hammer and break it on the spot. It was frustrating just using it. The motor in the lens is VERY slow, so autofocus is horrible, and at times I would recompose the focus point and the lens just didn’t do anything at all. But I know from the past using other lens that it will be out of focus so I had to manually move the ring so that the focus would just work. Also the lens barrel effect is of the charts, it distorts everything with bowing all the walls to the limit (and this happened from 10-24mm range). Yet this is just tip of the iceberg of how bad this lens is. After all the jobs that day, I came back to the office to process the photos (which by that time I was already 2 hours behind on everything) thanks to traffic and trying to rent out a camera in downtown. At first I thought my computer was going bad. BUT NO it was the lens and the quality of the photos it produces. I couldn’t believe it but where I selected the focus area it was in focus yet everything around it was blurry. Ok so I understand if you are shooting at the 3.5 F-Stop but this is at F9 everything should be in focus and yet it’s not. I hate, hate, hate that lens. I don’t even what to talk about this lens. I’m done.

The end result, is that on the same day (Friday July 31st) I ordered new camera which I will do another post about it. If you have seen my facebook page you will see a picture of UPS and the title in the photos is “I am very excited!!!!”, why was I so excited? Because I got my new and I mean new system.

That’s why the blog post is titled “Goodbye”, because I said goodbye to Nikon for ever (I think) and moved on to Fujifilm. Yes you have read it correctly, I will be selling all my Nikon gear (or what’s left of it). But now I have a Fuji X-T1 with XF 10-24mm F4 R IOS lens. I know I had it for a very short period of time but I LOVE IT. Why? well that will be in the next post since I want to play around with it little bit more before I write a review on it. All I want to say and finish this blog post with a statement of “I feel like I lived under a rock before I got X-T1”.

Here are the photos of what happened to my Nikon system:

Jake and Jenny Portrait Photography |Shutter Avenue Photography

So I have mentioned Jenny in one of the previous blog post about logo design, it is the person who designed my new logo for my business. But one thing I haven’t mentioned is that last year in November I photographed her and her husband Jake.

Denver Portrait Photography

I have to admit they are a great couple, I loved hanging around them and photographing them. The location that we have selected was in Cherry Creek Reservoir Park where there are stables for horses are and apparently Jenny takes care of one of the horses there. So yes we did do some photos with her horse and it was lots of fun and we did get in trouble because even though we were at least 300 feet off the path we got bad wrap from the instructor since she told us that the horses were getting afraid of flash. 0_O But in the end we still walked around and found lots of areas for backgrounds. Yet I want to talk a little bit about Jake and Jenny who have become good friends of mine. Hanging around them you get a good vibe from them, it was easy to photograph them because they value photography and listen to the photographer, so in the end we had plenty of photos for them. Well take a look for yourself at some of the images below.
