Lens Review of XF 50-140mm f/2.8 for Fuji Cameras

Here is my input or a review of Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR which I have rented recently for few jobs.

Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

Fuji X-T1 with Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

I would like to start with pros of this lens: Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR is a good lens and it has few features that I like such as image stabilizer (by the way the previous lens for my Nikon D300 didn’t have this and it would very difficult to shoot with once your hand gets tired), ED element which reduces dramatically chromatic aberrations and color fringing. Also the inner zoom is great since nothing on the outside moves when you are zooming in and out which WR is good for as well. The WR stands for weather sealing and I don’t know how well it’s sealed but when photographing in Chicago there was light drizzle in the morning and the lens was still in a good shape after that.  The F2.8 feature is great with low light and for a nice bokeh (background blur) when photographing portraits. Now I did use this lens for event photography and architectural use when I went to Chicago and to me it seemed very good if it’s on a tripod for both photoshoots. The OIS (image stabilizer) is great and I was able to photograph at 1/60 and below that and the images did come out sharp without tripod. The other great thing about this lens it doesn’t feel cheap, yes there is a little bit of plastic and rubber but most of it is metal casing. Also this is a very sharp lens and I mean very sharp with little bit of or almost none of distortion at the corners of the photos.

And this is a good way to get into the cons of this lens: coming back to the sharpness of this lens and autofocus is just ok. I had lots of trouble when photographing event and architecture that it would just try to focus and I could hear the motor working but had trouble focusing. I understand if there was not enough of detail to focus on but Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR should have been able to focus when there is lots of contrast to pick up on. When photographing event which I was hired for, it was low light conditions in some rooms but in the main hall there was plenty of light but the lens just panics and doesn’t want to focus at all not only because of low light but because the subjects moving and for this reason this is not a good lens for weddings because you could miss the shot while the lens is thinking. Also the motor is kind of loud and I didn’t notice this until I was photographing inside the church in Chicago because of almost dead silence you will hear the motor working not only when its trying to focus but even when just standing still and already it found the focus.

Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

Since I didn’t have model release for this event all I can post is close up images, which for very close up images is where the lens had a hard time to focus.

Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

The images on the left is with wide angle lens but the image on the right is with the 50-140mm lens (which I did have to come a little bit closer to get this close up shot of balconies).

Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

This is the church in Chicago where I really heard the motor of the lens working.

Fuji XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

The main big image on the right is where the lens struggled to focus even though there is tons of area for the lens to focus.

Over all this is a good lens, it’s not light but then this is a tele-photo lens so I was not expecting feather light lens, and one last thing don’t try to use it as a micro lens. The closest you can get is up to 3 meters and after that it will not be able to focus so use this lens as a tele-photo lens and if you know how to quickly manual focus then this is the best lens.

Architectural Photography for Skyline Plastering | California Architectural Photographer

At the beginning of December yes last year, I was hired by Chicago construction company “Skyline Plastering Inc” to photograph their projects. I know its not the first time I have mentioned this but I still want to say “I do love to travel” and when I combine two things travel+photography I really enjoy it. It was a privilege to do some photography outside of my day to day area and even though I am California Architectural Photographer this opportunity I could not pass on.

Skyline Plastering company contacted me in November asking to photograph few projects for them to document their work throughout Chicago and surrounding areas. The projects which were requested from them to photograph are one or two over all photos and few close-up/detail shots yet in the end I photographed 14 projects in 3 days. This is a lot since the projects were not in one location, lots of driving was required (which took big chunk of time of the day), plus weather was a factor since in Chicago and surrounding areas are affected by fog at that time of the year. In the end the company was satisfied with the final images and here are some final photos:

Phil & Mary’s Wedding by Denver Wedding Photographer

Even so that we are now in 2016 I still wanted to write a blog about a wedding that happened last year and even though I am Denver Wedding Photographer which the wedding wasn’t in Denver but it’s not far from Denver so it should count.

Denver Wedding Photographer

Phil and Mary found me through online sources, and after that everything took off. They are a great couple which I really enjoyed photograph for. Sometimes a question that pops up through people that I know and also clients ask me: Do you filter through your clients for weddings? The simple answer is yes I do. Now with that said it doesn’t mean I turn every couple down but it does mean that if I see that the couple is not “compatable with me” I honestly don’t photograph for them. By the way this applies to everything portraits and weddings. But this is something which I will talk about in some other blog.

For now I want to talk about Phil and Mary and their wonderful wedding. The wedding took place at Meadows at Marshdale in Evergreen, CO and I want to say that I have never photographed at this location but loved it. The couple chose a great place for their romantic wedding. They have put a lot of effort and work to customize the venue to their wedding. Having two different places for the ceremony and reception was a great idea and the venue place does offer that to any couple. Phil and Mary’s ceremony was great, short and very entertaining especially thanks to their pastor and also want to mention the band which was playing all the music throughout the ceremony.

The reception was also fantastic, and fun. I am sure that when Phil and Mary will be looking back at their wedding they will be happy, and knowing it was memorable.

Re-Cap For Real Estate | Denver Real Estate Photographer

I might not be the most famous real estate photographer in Denver, since I know that there are other major and small time photographers that do the samething (I mean real estate photography), but wanted to see how many jobs I have done last year and where. So for the year of 2015 I have photographed over 190 homes just here in Denver area alone. The map below with all the red dots is where I have photographed (almost) each home, now the reason why I said almost is because Denver real estate photography is hard to pinpoint since some listings where so close to each other that the dots just overlapped multiple times. Also I had to narrow down to the size of the map to some degree of 30 mile radius, since I did have jobs all the way from Fort Collins to Breckenridge and all they way down past Colorado Springs.

First Time For Me in Architectural Photography

There are times when I do experiment in architectural photography, everything from: new equipment, style of photography, post editing, and other technics. Yet for this project which I was hired to photograph architecture I have never done in the past. Before I get in all the details, I would like to mention Andrew Batson and his company Brass Key Property Brokers. I have photographed for Andrew who is incredibly wonderful person and I enjoy working for him every time he hires me to photograph his beautiful homes. But sort of recently I had a project from him to do architectural photography or more like twilight photos of three custom homes which he build. Now you can say “what’s so difficult about photography twilight photos of three homes?”, well all three homes were done in one evening. I have done in the past two photos in one evening but it was during summer hours where twilight time is a bit longer, so I would have more time to photograph. This project was done in mid-October and this was a challenge for me. Since we had a good agreement with Andrew about this project of what could be done or not, and other crucial details we went forward with this assignment. Honestly because of Andrews flexibility on this project I was eager to do this. Well in the end all three homes were photographed but would I do it again? My answer would yes and no: yes if it’s the right time of the year and no because of how much is involved in architectural photography for twilight photos, but it’s not worth it since the quality of the photos goes down. But take a look at the final photos below and I have listed them in the order which they were photographed.

I would also wanted to mention big Thank You to Andrew for pedaling a pedal boat. The reason is: he asked me to photograph one home for him, from a small island in the middle of a lake, to capture the lake and the back of the home. Yet it was impossible to take a speedboat and park it next to the island without damaging the boat so the pedal boat was needed to get close to the island. But here is the final image:
